Tornado Group Case Study
One platform for a fuel retail group that outgrew its own website. Connecting gas stations, convenience stores, construction, CCTV, POS, and real estate under one custom CMS with RBAC.

A Multi-Audience Platform, Not Just a Website
Tornado isn't one business. It's a network of gas stations, a chain of convenience stores, and a services arm covering construction, CCTV surveillance, retail POS, and real estate — plus partners, hiring, and an industry news operation on top.
All of that was supposed to live on one website, and every part of it changes weekly. Fuel prices move daily. Job postings open and close. Stations get added.
So the real project wasn't a website. It was a platform: a public site that four different external audiences can each cut straight through, sitting on a custom CMS that lets the people who actually run the stations keep it current without calling a developer.
Who This Had To Work For
1. The Driver On Their Phone
Right now wants the nearest station, today's fuel price, and whether there's a C-Store attached.
2. Commercial B2B Buyer
Evaluating Tornado for construction, CCTV, POS, or real estate — a slow, document-heavy, comparison-driven decision.
3. The Job Seeker
Often applying directly from a phone in a forecourt car park.
4. Partners & Stakeholders
Looking for credibility, scale, and proof the company is an active industry operator.
5. The Station Manager (Inside)
Needs to change today's fuel price in under a minute, from a station, without a support ticket. That fifth user is the one most corporate website projects forget. It's also the one that decides whether the site is still accurate six months after launch.
Design Decisions Worth Explaining
1. Going Dark — Why It Wasn't Just Style
Fuel retail sites are overwhelmingly white. We went near-black with a single saturated red. Photography of forecourts, canopies, and store interiors carries the page on dark canvas. Red CTAs read from across the room.
2. One Accent Colour, Used Sparingly
Red does exactly two things: it marks the primary action, and it marks the section break. No decorative red. The moment an accent shows up decoratively, it stops meaning “click here”.
3. Two Different Services Pages
Consumer forecourt services need speed and visual scannability. Commercial construction, CCTV, POS, and real estate need PDFs and technical quote request forms. Keeping them distinct served both buyers best.
4. Listing → Details as the Spine
Listing is a dense card grid searchable by city, state, and ZIP. Details opens up full-bleed for a single location with photos, hours, fuel prices, promotions, and route directions.
How We Built It
Custom CMS as the Core Product
We built a custom CMS rather than dropping in an off-the-shelf tool. The content model isn't generic articles — it's stations with live fuel prices, stores with promotions, B2B services with document libraries, and structured job applications.
RBAC & Fuel Price Audit Tracking
Station managers update pricing directly in seconds. Role-based access control (RBAC) ensures regional managers, store staff, and HR users only access their own controls with complete activity tracking.
MongoDB for Flexible Station Data & Geospatial Queries
Stations vary widely — some have EV charging and car washes, others are unmanned C-stores. MongoDB's document model handles varying facility shapes cleanly with 2dsphere geospatial indexing for 'stations near me'.
Next.js & Server-Side Rendered Performance
Content arrives as server-rendered HTML for instant page loads and indexing, paired with interactive client-side filtering for station searching.
Node API & Automated Lead Routing
Handles customer inquiries, quote requests, and job application uploads directly to the right department rather than dumping into an unmonitored mailbox.
WhatsApp Business Chatbot Integration
Provides instant answers to customer questions regarding station locations, operating hours, and fuel availability on the messaging channel customers already use.
Google Analytics & AdSense Integration
Built-in analytics reporting alongside managed AdSense placements integrated directly into news and content templates.

Scope Decisions Made Deliberately
- No 3rd-party fuel pricing feeds: Store managers update pricing in 15 seconds through RBAC without recurring feed subscriptions or external failure points.
- Technical SEO Foundation: Server-rendered markup and clean routing established, with ongoing SEO strategy scoped as a dedicated engagement.
- Custom CMS over off-the-shelf plugins: Custom data modeling for stations, stores, and commercial divisions avoided plugin debt.
