# Schema.org Markup and Structured Data for DRC Sites
Summary: Schema.org markup is invisible code added to a site's HTML that tells Google — and increasingly ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity — exactly what each page represents (a business, a product, an article, an FAQ), so it can earn rich results and get cited in AI-generated answers.
Code your visitor never sees, but the engines read first
When a customer in Kinshasa or Lubumbashi searches "pharmacie de garde Gombe" or "web development agency DRC," Google doesn't read the page the way a person does. It tries to infer from the raw HTML whether it's looking at a local business, a blog post, a product listing, or a plain static page. Schema.org markup — the shared vocabulary maintained jointly by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex since 2011 — removes the guesswork by explicitly declaring, in JSON-LD, the entity type and its attributes: name, address, phone number, hours, price, reviews, author.
That code is what lets a listing show up with star ratings, a price, or opening hours directly in the results, instead of a plain blue link. For a business in the DRC competing for every organic click against bigger players (Jumia, social platforms, international directories), that visibility gap translates directly into traffic and phone calls.
Where Congolese websites actually stand
This gap isn't unique to the DRC. Globally, the WebDataCommons extraction from the October 2024 Common Crawl corpus (2.4 billion HTML pages analyzed) found structured data on 51.25% of pages, up from just 5.7% in its first extraction in 2010. HTTP Archive's 2024 Web Almanac, which measures a different sample, puts JSON-LD specifically at roughly 41% of pages, up from 34% in 2022. Two different methodologies, one trend: markup is now the norm on the global web. No comparable study exists for .cd domains, and we have no market-wide figure to offer — what we see in the audits we run for Congolese clients is a recurring pattern rather than a measured proportion: either no Schema.org markup at all, or a partial implementation inherited from a generic WordPress theme. The check takes thirty seconds on any URL (see the verification section below), including your own site.
That gap is an opportunity, not just a shortfall. In a market where Google controls roughly 96.8% of searches performed across Africa (June 2024 data, versus barely 2.5% for Bing), a properly marked-up site tends to stand out almost automatically against local competitors who have implemented nothing at all.
Why this matters more than it did three years ago
Two recent shifts make this more urgent than it used to be:
1. AI Overviews and generative answers. Google, along with ChatGPT and Perplexity, draws on the same indexing signals to build its summarized answers. Clean JSON-LD markup helps these systems extract a reliable entity — a business name, a price, an author, a date — instead of guessing from unstructured text. A page without markup can simply be skipped over, even when the underlying content is good.
2. Mobile connectivity dominates in the DRC. With 60.3 million active mobile connections in early 2025 (54.3% of the population) and 75.1% of those already running on 3G/4G/5G broadband, most local searches happen on a small screen, where rich results — stars, hours, price — take up disproportionate space compared to a plain text link.
The schema types that actually matter for a DRC business
You don't need to mark up everything. For an SME, a professional practice, or an online shop based in the DRC, four types cover most of the ground:
| Schema.org type | Typical DRC use case | Concrete benefit |
|---|---|---|
LocalBusiness (or a subtype: Restaurant, MedicalClinic, ProfessionalService) | Clinic, restaurant, agency, workshop with a physical address in Kinshasa/Lubumbashi | Address, hours, and phone number surface directly in results and on Maps |
Product + Offer | Online shop, spare-parts catalog, furniture retailer | Price, currency (CDF or USD), and availability shown in results |
FAQPage | FAQ page covering delivery times, payment methods, shipping | Rich snippets that take up more visual space on the results page |
Article / BlogPosting | Company blog, industry news | Author, publish date, and image displayed; better eligibility for AI Overview citations |
On top of that, Organization — placed once on the homepage — ties together the logo, social profiles, and legal identity of the business, which helps Google correctly associate a Congolese brand with its own Knowledge Panel instead of an unrelated entity with the same name.
NAP consistency: the prerequisite markup can't fix
Schema.org doesn't paper over an inconsistency: if the name, address, and phone number (NAP) differ between the website, the Google Business Profile listing, and the site header, LocalBusiness markup will just expose that contradiction to Google faster. Before adding any code, these three details need to match to the character — including the phone format (+243) and the spelling of the commune.
Another point specific to the DRC: .cd domains are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, with no authority verifying the registrant's business identity. That means nothing at the domain-name level vouches for a site's legitimacy to Google — which is exactly the gap that consistent Organization/LocalBusiness markup, aligned with other signals like Google Business Profile and press mentions, helps close.
How to check and implement it without breaking the site
Google's recommended format is JSON-LD — a <script type="application/ld+json"> block placed in the <head> or <body>, kept separate from the visible HTML — rather than inline microdata, which is more fragile to maintain. The practical steps:
1. Audit what already exists using Google's Rich Results Test and the "Enhancements" report in Google Search Console, which flags markup errors already in place.
2. Pick a single primary type per page — don't run LocalBusiness and Product in conflict on the same URL.
3. Generate the JSON-LD dynamically from the same CMS data shown on screen, never hardcoded values that drift from the visible content — Google penalizes that mismatch.
4. Re-validate after every redesign or CMS migration: a theme or platform change very often strips the markup without anyone noticing.
5. Fill in the fields specific to the Congolese market — the ones an imported theme almost always leaves wrong: addressCountry: "CD", a phone number in international +243... format, opening hours expressed in the Africa/Kinshasa zone (UTC+1 in Kinshasa, UTC+2 in the former Katanga), and above all an explicit priceCurrency — CDF or USD — since both currencies circulate side by side and a price with no currency code is ambiguous to Google and to the buyer alike.
This is work we build into every web development project we deliver, because a fast, well-designed site that stays invisible to search engines for lack of markup gives up a real share of its commercial value.
Common mistakes seen on Congolese sites
LocalBusinessmarkup copied from a generic theme, still carrying a default address or hours from another country.- Prices declared in
Offerwithout a currency code (CDForUSD), which makes the markup invalid. - Multiple, contradictory
Organizationblocks across different pages of the same site. FAQPagemarkup built around questions that appear nowhere in the visible text — a practice Google explicitly discourages and may ignore or penalize.
FAQ
Does Schema.org markup directly improve Google rankings?
No, it isn't a direct ranking factor, but it makes a page eligible for rich results (stars, price, hours) and easier for generative engines to extract content from — both of which indirectly boost click-through rate.
Can it be added to a site that's already live, without a full redesign?
Yes. JSON-LD is added on top of existing code without touching the design or page structure — it's a targeted technical task, not a rebuild.
Does a multilingual site (French/English/Lingala) need different markup per language?
The schema vocabulary itself stays the same, but each language version of a page needs its own JSON-LD block reflecting the content actually shown in that language.
How do I check whether my site already has markup?
Google's free Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) analyzes any public URL and shows which schema types it detects, along with any errors.
